2007-08 Workshops
The Junior Center offers classroom teachers a variety of hands-on science and art workshops which support the California State Framework requirements. Workshops may be presented at school sites or at the Junior Center's site in Oakland. Each workshop is 75 minutes in length, interactive in design, and presented by an experienced instructor.

Workshop Descriptions
"In the Style of…" Series
Students will be introduced to the life and work of the featured artists through stories, a demonstration, and a hands-on art lesson. Students will learn about the artist's working style, inspirations, and favorite subject matter by viewing prints of the artist's work and through the instructor's demonstration.
"In Touch with Nature" Series
This interactive presentation teaches children about the habitat of the featured animal, its' special features and adaptive behaviors. Students participate in a guided drawing exercise which illustrates what they have learned about each animal.
"Rocket Science"
Experiments with air pressure allow students to hypothesize and compare results. Students work in teams to build and launch water rockets which can fly as high as 70 feet.

ARTIST PORTFOLIOS
Available October 2007 - May 2008
When scheduling a workshop from the "In the Style of…" Series, classroom teachers are invited to reserve the artist portfolio for the workshop they have selected. Portfolios may be reserved before or after the hands-on workshop and may by picked up at the Junior Center during regular business hours. (See contact page). Portfolios are a wonderful way for classroom teachers to "extend the learning" following a presentation by a Junior Center instructor.
